I consider is  interesting implement a new functionality that allow modify the tick length when these aren't visible.
I have attached the client request below: 
“We want to be able to change the length of the tick marks to control the axis label placement, but we do not want to show the tick marks. Currently, you are not able to do both. We have temporarily changed the tick mark font to the background color, but we would rather have explicit control of the visibility property”
