About Stockholm Environment InstituteThe Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is an international not-for-profit research organization that has been engaged in environment and development issues at local, national, regional and global policy levels for almost 30 years. Our goal is to bring about change for sustainable development by bridging science and policy, and we do this by conducting research and building software tools that support decision makers. SEI was recently ranked among the top two think tanks in the world working on environment policy.Describe your ApplicationWe develop two major software tools:LEAP, the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning system, is a tool for energy policy and climate change planning. It has been adopted by thousands of organizations in more than 190 countries worldwide and was used by at least 35 countries as the basis for their pledges to the 2015 Paris climate conference. Its users include government agencies, academics, non-governmental organizations, consulting companies, and energy utilities, and it has been used at many different scales ranging from cities and states to national, regional and global applications. LEAP is a scenario-based planning tool that can be used to account for energy flows and resources, pollution emissions, and economic costs and benefits. It can even calculate health and ecosystem impacts associated with alternative strategies. More info at www.energycommunity.org WEAP, the Water Evaluation And Planning system is a tool for integrated water resources planning. It helps water planners to consider alternative strategies for managing scarce water resources, for example among agricultural, municipal and environmental uses. WEAP incorporates these issues into a practical yet robust tool that consider a wide range of issue including water demand, water supply, runoff, infiltration, crop requirements, flows, storage, pollution generation, treatment, discharge and water quality under varying hydrologic and policy scenarios. More info at www.weap21.org Why did you choose TeeChart? Both of our software tools are developed using Embarcadero’s Delphi and both are focused on visualizing results in a form that is readily understandable by energy and water planners. TeeChart was the obvious choice for both our tools because it is a powerful and flexible charting engine that produces high quality visual outputs and because it is very closely integrated with Delphi. In particular, it was essential for us that any charting tool must be written in Delphi and provide full access to its source code.Describe a specific project challenge your company overcame using TeeChartFor one of our tools, LEAP, we needed to create a rather unusual “wedge” chart. These show on a timeline the likely contribution of different policies or sectors toward meeting a greenhouse gas emission reduction goal, relative to how emissions are likely to increase without any policies. TeeChart was flexible and easy enough to use that this proved quite straightforward to create. What benefits have you experienced from using TeeChart? We have been using TeeChart for almost 20 years and have always found it remarkably easy to work with. Both the documentation and the technical support have been excellent.Senior Scientist and Lead Developer of LEAP Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) www.sei.org |
